Is it dangerous to spay my dog if she's in heat or pregnant?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 3 lbs

I made an appointment for my dog to get spayed a while ago but now she’s in heat and I think she might be pregnant. Is it dangerous for her to still get spayed while pregnant or even in heat? I love her I don’t want to be putting her in danger either. Or even if I didn’t get her spayed would it be safe for her to have the puppies, she’s 7 pounds and Smokey is I think 20 pounds he’s half shitzu/Pomeranian.

It's much more dangerous to have her spayed while in heat/pregnant but the alternative is not better because her mate is much bigger than her, for that reason i would still opt to have her spayed ASAP.

It's fine to go ahead and have her spayed now. We often spay dogs in the early stages of pregnancy - this is generally a safe, routine procedure, and would be the best option for Maia if you don't want to breed her.
