My dog's dew claw stitches are bleeding. Should I use antibiotic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 61 lbs

My 1.5 year old German Shephard, Bailey, had a spay surgery and her rear dew claws removed on Monday. The spay incision is healing fine, but the dew claws seem to be bleeding through some bandages still and are still red around the stitches. I have been re-bandaging them, and she is not disturbing the bandages at all. Our vet office is closed until Monday, and she otherwise seems fine- am I doing the right thing by checking them daily, re-bandaging them, and applying a little triple antibiotic?

Yes, keep checking them daily and re-bandage them, but stop applying the triple antibiotic. Nothing should be put on the stitches, and you rubbing on them with this cream is interrupting the healing process. Have Bailey seen by a vet on Monday if there is still redness and bleeding. Best of luck.
