What can I do for my German Shepherd's scabby skin under fur?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 27 days old

Hello. My German shepherd has come out in some scabby skin under her fur. I noticed it about 4 days ago and just salt watered it to clean it as I thought she must have just cut herself somehow but its still there. I just wondered if you could give me any advice before I go paying a fortune at the vets for it to be nothing?

Hello. Willow may have a bit of dermatitis going on. I would recommend bathing her in a Benzoyl Peroxide based shampoo which you can find at most pet retailers & online. Follow the directions by making sure you leave the lather on for 10 minutes before rinsing. Repeat twice a week until the skin heals ( which may take several weeks of bathing ). If the skin does not seem to be healing, she may have allergies or require antibiotics, but a medicated shampoo often will clear up these minor issues. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
