Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 10 years and 1 month old | 21 lbs
My dog has randomly been what seems to be dry heaving. He has dry heaved in the past and this isn’t as intense. We took him to the vet and xrays do not show anything of concern (heart and lungs are fine). My vet isn’t sure what it is and I am very worried. My dog gets very anxious when this happens. Otherwise he is acting pretty normal. It happened again this morning around 3am randomly and lasted about 5 minutes and then went away and he went back to sleep.

Are you sure it's dry heaving and not reverse sneezing or something else? It would be best to video tape and episode so your vet can see it. We can determine a lot by seeing what the animal is actually doing. Sometimes what owner's describe is not medically correct. Please videotape an episode and show your vet. That would be extremely helpful. My best guess is that he has reverse sneezing or a collapsing trachea. Neither of which would be diagnosed easily with an x-ray. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
