My dog is snorting/grunting in smoke. Is it asthma or vet emergency?

Hi, my dog Graham (Multipug) is snorting/grunting and has been for the last 12 hours - we are in a bush fire area and there is a lot of smoke about- is it possible he has Asthma? Should I just try and keep him inside or does he require further vet care? Thanks

The safest bet would be to take Graham to the vet or to a veterinary ER as any respiratory issues are especially concerning in brachycephalic breeds (including pug mixes) that have compromised airways due to their anatomy. Smoke inhalation can be very serious in dogs (as well as all animals and humans), resulting in inflammation of their airways. Many chemicals in smoke can also cause airways damage. Your vet/ER vet may recommend keeping him in an oxygen cage and administering steroids and/or bronchdiators until he is breathing normally again. I would definitely keep him inside until you are able to bring him to the vet. Good luck!
