My unaltered male lab is bleeding bright red blood. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 7 years old | 102 lbs

I’ve noticed small amounts of bright red blood coming from my unaltered 6 year old male lab recently. It seems to be happening after we have other dogs visit. The first time I noticed it I examined the internal area of the penis and found irritation, but he doesn’t have now. He doesn’t seem to have any urinary frequency or urgency or pain. We have noticed he is more bloated than usual and burps frequently for some reason. A little less energy but overall just about his normal self. Any advice?

This is very likely to be a prostate disease (cancer or infection), if it is an infection or benign tumor then having him neutered is likely to fix the problem, if it is cancer it might not be treatable (in some cases surgical remove of the tumor can be attempted).
