My dog has a soft lump. Should I take him to the vet just to be safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 10 months old | 12 lbs

I've noticed a soft almost fluid feeling mass on Noah about the size of a fifty cent piece. Everything I've googled comes back it's fine, old age. I just lost a 21 year old so I don't consider a almost 11 year old to be old.... should I take him in to just to be safe? He hates the vet and the car or we would have already been there.....

First of all, I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your pup. It's never easy, no matter how old they are. The bump you are seeing on Noah could be a mass, or it could be a skin lesion caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, or could be a combination of the above. I recommend making an appointment to have Noah seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the bump you’ve noticed and to make sure it is treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine what is causing the bump and to provide treatment. Hopefully it is something benign or easily treatable, but I always recommend getting any new lumps or bumps checked, as it is not possible to tell without further testing, and it's always good to be cautious.
