My dog is in pain, arching back. Vet found nothing. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 6 years and 4 months old

My 6 year old male Shih-tzu cross Maltese has been lethargic and weak since yesterday morning. He is arching his back a lot and yelps in pain when he exerts himself. He seems to be in a lot of pain and not like himself at all. We visited a vet clinic and they conducted X-rays, ultrasounds and blood tests and told us they couldn't find a cause and discharged us. Do you know what is possibly going on with my dog? Is there anyway we could make him more comfortable? Or fix the problem?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly neck or back pain. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. Since he has not improved after seeing your veterinarian, I recommend that you have Romeo reevaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Romeo feel better. In the meantime, reduce his activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. Good luck and have a good night!
