My senior dog has bloody poop & gas, vet found nothing. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 9 months old | 50 lbs

11 yo, mixed breed, medium sized, neutered male dog has chronic bloody stool (red/pink, not runny), stomach noises, and very foul gas. This has happened on and off for 6 months, from 1 to 4 times per month. Otherwise, he seems fine. He is on a strict rx diet from the vet. Vet did bloodwork and took fecal sample and found nothing. What else should we be looking for?

I would recommend that you talk to your vet about an abdominal ultrasound. Also, if your vet has not performed a rectal exam, that would also be a good thing to ask about. Since he is 11, my biggest concern would be a potential tumor. It could also be that he has inflammatory bowel disease. You could also use a probiotic for him which may be beneficial. Talk to your vet about a fiber supplement such as Metamucil as well, which could also be helpful. Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
