My dog is coughing months after a tick bite. Is it chronic disease?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 5 years old | 64 lbs

My dogs eyes had become red, inflamed and droopy & he was slightly lethargic, I checked him and found a tick that easy attached on his back/lower neck area between shoulders, I removed it & it was pretty full with blood. It took a few days but he returned back to his normal self so I didn't bring him to the vet. It's been 5-7 months and he is starting to have boughts of Huff like coughing, is it possible he got something from the tick that's chronic?

Tick borne disease can present as coughing. Huffing or coughing can be due to many other things including infection, heart conditions, allergies or an esophageal problem. I recommend to play it safe and have Sarge examined by his veterinarian. The doctor may recommend antibody titers or other diagnostics to check for tick exposure. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
