My dog can't stand up and won't use his back leg. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 55 lbs

I have a 2 year old collie/aussie. He wasn't putting any weight on his back leg this morning, but didn't seem like he was in pain when I inspected it. Now he acts like he can't stand up, and won't get off the couch when someone walks in the door (very abnormal for him.)

Unfortunately, if Milo is non -weight bearing on a hind limb, there is a chance that he has a full or partial tear of a cruciate ligament. Bringing Milo to your vet or veterinary ER ASAP is recommended to have a full orthopedic examination performed (possibly sedated) to determine if there is a cruciate tear and may require surgery. Activity restriction, pain medication such as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and a natural anti-inflammatory such as VetriScience Mobility Flex or Dasuquin would likely be recommended by your vet even if he/she determines it to be a soft tissue injury such as a sprain. Good luck!
