Why is my betta fish floating, losing color, and not eating properly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Betta | Male

I don’t know if you guys can help with beta fish but my fish is either old or ill. He is always behind the filter and can’t grasp his food, he can get it between his lips but can get it in and eat it. He is also losing color and seems to not be able to swim to the bottom of the tank. A month ago I googled why is he sitting at the bottom and it brought up that he took in to much food or air and suggested that do not feed him in 2 day or so. (I had him for 2 years going on 3)

Thanks for reaching out about Elliot and including photos. Concerns would include over-inflation of the swim bladder, causing positive buoyancy. This is possibly caused by an infection of the physostomatic duct which connects the swim bladder to the intestinal tract. If that duct is blocked, air can not escape the swim bladder and becomes over distended, thereby floating more. Antibiotics are needed to treat, and a veterinary visit is recommended. good luck.
