Why are my dog's paw pads getting hard and rough but he's not in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | neutered | 3 years and 5 months old

My 3 yr old Rottweiler's paw on one foot has a few hard rough edges on two pads. They seem to be flattening out more. He is in no pain and they are hard and rough to the touch. He has no skin conditions and has good eating habits and is not over weight. This is only on one foot.

It may be something about the way that he walks or stands on that paw. Dogs do develope calluses in the paws (just like we do on our feet) and they are protective in nature so you don’t want to soften or remove them. The best way to know if it is a callus is to have the paw examined by the veterinarian. The doctor will palpate it and will likely be able to know if it is pathologic or normal. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
