Why is my chihuahua suddenly stuck on her bed and crying a lot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | 10 years old | 5 lbs

Hi! My sisters little chihuahua has been irregularly crying and scratching and always wanting to be on her bed. (her bed is a loft bed so the dog can’t get up there without being lifted) Her dog is 24/7 wanting to be on the bed. If she is not on it, she will bark at the bottom.... and cry and follow my sister around. She doesn’t even come down to eat or go to the bathroom. It fairly new... she says it’s been going on for less than 2 weeks. Any theories?

It’s hard to say why she would do this, but wouldn’t it be great if Kiss could just talk?!?! Obviously watch Kiss for any signs of illness or pain: limping, reluctant to walk or play, acting lethargic or any other signs of illness. If she seems abnormal, then I recommend to have her seen by her veterinarian. Behavior wise, Kiss may think the bed is her den and every time she cries and you lift her on the bed, you reward the behavior. Pets learn by positive and negative reinforcements. Every time she has a positive reinforcement, she will continue to exhibit the behavior. It’s hard to say why she would start this behavior. Watch her off the bed and see if there’s anything on the floor or in the house that seems to make her scared. Slippery floors are a very common stresser for pets so be mindful of that. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
