My cat licked tea tree oil. Is it toxic and should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 10 lbs

Used tea tree oil not diluted and my cat for fleas, he licked it and immediately started to gag, so I washed him and rinsed his mouth with some water, he seems fine no problems other than was drooling a little right after, it's been about 2 hours since and he seems fine just upset with his bath, but I'm still worried

Hello. So this now tells you to never use tea tree oil on cats. It is TOXIC to cats. He should be fine with such a minor ingestion, but do not use this around pets, it is just not safe. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
