Why is my dog scratching, losing hair, and has scabs/rash?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 1 month old | 65 lbs

My dog has a rash on her skin (legs, chest, back) and is losing hair from the excess scratching/biting. She gave birth to puppies 3 months ago. She was eating cheap food during pregnancy but is now eating canidae pure in hopes it’s only an allergic reaction to the cheap food. Should I give her amoxicillin? The rash is pretty bad. She has tons of scabs, too.

Hello. Unfortunately, amoxicillin is not going to help in this situation. You really are going to be much more ahead in solving this problem with Duney by seeing your vet. You need to see if she has picked up a skin infection ( which can be bacterial or yeast ), mange mites, or a significant allergy to something. With the correct diagnosis, proper treatment can be recommended & you can help her to stop scratching & self-mutilating herself. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
