Is it normal for my dog to scream during anal gland expression?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 42 lbs

Went to the vet for a check up and got my dogs anal glands expressing. We heard her in the room screaming and yelping. Is that Normal...? They said they were completely full. I never heard her make those noises before so was just curious. She seems all happy and better after it got done.

yes it is very common for dogs to cry out when they get their anal glands expressed. Dogs don't like they rear end messed with and if they were full, it could have been uncomfortable for her to have them expressed. It sounds like they needed to be done though. I would start taking her in every 4-6 weeks to have them done so she doesn't get an infection. I hope this helps!
