My cat's spay incision is leaking yellow fluid. Is it infected?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 6 lbs

My cat was spayed on Sunday. On Thursday her stitches came undone and she had her insides hanging out for maybe about 4-5 hours before restitching. She's been on oral antibiotics till Monday morning. She had refused to eat or drink for 2 days so she was put on drip. She was also given metronidazole 1/2ml every 6hrs. There was some infection in the incision and now she is leaking yellow fluids from her incision. What could the fluid be? This just happened now and no vet is available.

Hello, thank you for your question about Curie. The yellow fluid that you are describing sound consistent with an infection and pus fluid. If Curie is already on antibiotics and the incision is still intact I would recommend continuing to monitor her. Ideally, allowing the infected fluid to drain should help her heal. You could also try warm compressing the area to help draw the fluid out. If the incision comes apart again or Curie becomes lethargic or has any vomiting/diarrhea I would have her rechecked by your veterinarian. Hope this helps, good luck!
