My cat is terrified of everything. How can I calm him for roommates?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 12.13 lbs

I’ve had my cat for 3 years and he is extremely scared of everything. He hides in my wardrobe most of the time and will run away by the tinyest noise. He is very comfortable around me, he’s almost obsessed with me, and he is comfortable around my mother and sister (who we live with) but he would never be able to come out for anyone else. I’m getting very worried beacuse I will be moving out soon and I might be living with roommates, so I need some advice to make him calmer

Many cats are like Bubba and the good news is that most will get use to the roommates as long as the roommates are not loud/aggressive or scare him. Don’t force Bubba to interact with them, let him do it on his own terms. Having the roommates feed him and give him treats will help to gain trust. Make sure he has places to hide in the house and if you can put a cat tree or other areas where he can get up high, that will help. Feliway diffusers or changing the diet to Royal Canin Calm formula can also help. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
