My heartworm positive dog is coughing blood. Should I go to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 35 lbs

Hello, i adopted a heartworm positive dog about 3 weeks ago and she wont be treated for about another month. She's had this cough for awhile and only sometimes will spit up flem or clear fluid. Just today she spit up alittle bit of blood and flem twice. I was wondering if i should take her to the vet or if this is another sign of the heart worms. Thank you.

Poor Bonnie! Coughing up blood is not expected with heartworm disease and indicates significant inflammation. It could also indicate a worsening of the condition. I recommend to take her in to see the veterinarian. It's better to be safe. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
