My dog's paw nail turned black and she's limping. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 150 lbs

My Great Dane has developed what looks like a blood sac under her nail. Ive been treating it with wound cleanser and neosporin, but now its turned black and she's starting to favor that paw. Any ideas as to what it can be? It started out as bright red, vut now it's black. I don't know if its from playing outside or something else. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. It appears that Daisy has avulsed the nail off of the sensitive nail bed. You might want to have your vet take a look at this to see if she needs antibiotics or needs to have the foot bandaged. You can soak the foot in warm water, your cleanser & Epsom salts for 10 minutes 2-3 times daily over the weekend, but if she is still having problems, please see your vet. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
