My dog's nail quick is exposed and drying. Will it heal okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 years and 6 months old | 18 lbs

My dog's nail from his back left foot started bleeding 3 days ago. My husband took him to the vet immediately and it looks like they clipped his nail but i just noticed today that his wick is about a quarter inch exposed. It appears to be drying out. They didn't recommend any pain reliever nor antibiotic. I have just been cleaning with warm water. The vet did say to put cornstarch on it to help it heal. I want to know whats going to happen to him

Hi, provided the quick does not get infected, the nail will gradually grow back. I think just cleaning it and making sure it does not get infected will be enough. If you should notice any oozing or swelling/inflammation of the area, it could mean that the nail bed is getting infected and it is best to have Jaxon checked over. Also try to prevent Jaxon licking the wound. Hope this helps !
