My dog won't eat or drink and is lethargic. Could it be stress?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 17 lbs

Our Shitz Tzu won't eat or drink. In the last 24 hours he has eaten very little and drank very little water. He doesn't want to move around a lot but will get up and move. He is breathing fine and seems to keep wanting to be petted. Could stress cause this. When we took him to vet today he back to his usual self and then later he's back to just laying down

Stress could cause this. Without knowing what the vet checked for or if any tests were run, it would be hard to say what is going on, however. You can try to entice some eating and drinking by adding a little boiled chicken or low-sodium chicken broth to Clifford's diet, however if he doesn't perk up in a day, or seems to worsen, talking with your vet again to see if any additional tests would be beneficial is best for finding out what is wrong.
