Why is my dog having nighttime accidents with dark, smelly urine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 29 days old | 70 lbs

I have a 9 month old pit/lab mix who has been having accidents in the middle of the night lately and her pee is really dark and has a strong odor! Are there any home remedies or over the counter treatments I can do for her? She drinks a ton of water!!

Unfortunately the concerns is that there may be a urinary tract infection which needs to be treated with antibiotics. I recommend to get her into see the veterinarian and have her urine checked for infection or crystals as these can commonly show up like this. Sometimes very concentrated urine can smell stronger and in that instance, you want to increase the drinking. This can be achieved by adding water to the food but it sounds like she is already drinking a lot. Play it safe and have her urine checked to be sure. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

If you r vet suspects this is behavioral, you may try taking her for a walk or whatever activity will get her to urinate more just before bed. You can also pick up the water bowel two hours before bed. Lastly, sometimes dogs need a refresher in house breaking and crating is the best option. I hope this helps.
