Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Female | spayed | 11 years and 8 months old | 7 lbs

I have a 12 year old toy poodle wit DCM . SHe is on enalaphril . She is coughing and wheezing more each day . She is also deaf and now going blind . She a hip defect from birth than is starting to cause her pain . She has also had bleeding with bowel movements for several years with a near fatal intestinal infection last March. My question is if I take her of her meds. will she go naturally faster . I am thinking that if she gets any worse I will have to let her go .

I would not recommend withdrawal of heart medications as a means to home euthanasia it this would run the risk of increasing the signs and symptoms of her heart disease (fluid on the lungs etc) and would be distressing for her. Unfortunately it does sound like she is approaching that stage that a thoughtful and compassionate euthansia may need to be considered; see the attached link which can help to provide a framework between all of her caregivers as to when such decisions should be discussed https://vet.osu.edu/vmc/sites/default/files/import/assets/pdf/hospital/companionAnimals/HonoringtheBond/HowDoIKnowWhen.pdf
