My cat has kidney disease. What else can I do besides his special diet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 19 years old | 9.5 lbs

Hi yesterday tony had a recheck of his renal values & SDMA decreased from 18 to 17, creatinine increased from 1.9 to 2.0, BUN increased from 37 to 41. Phosphorus protein potassium are all normal levels. these changes occurred between 12/12/2018 & yesterday. My vet feels these levels are stable. I wanted another opinion & to know if there is anything else I can do for tony at this stage besides his kidney diet? He eats well, he had a successful dental surgery 2wks ago and he’s gained weight! Ty!

Hello. This actually sounds pretty darn good! The only thing to add is to make sure Tony takes in as much fluids as possible & make sure you stay on top of those kidney rechecks. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
