My dog has red raw spots on her shaved belly after spay. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 11 lbs

My dog got spayed the other day and they had to shave her belly cause she's a pretty hairy dog. And now she has these red raw spots. I think it's just from itching cause of the hair being shaved but I just wanted to make sure. Is it from itching? And if so what can I put on it?

Poor girl, that doesn't look very comfortable. I'd recommend wiping the areas of with hydrogen peroxide once (avoiding the incision for her spay), and then putting her in a baby onsie (maybe two) in addition to an e-collar. The onsie is to protect her a skin if she tries to scratch. If it's looking worse instead of better after 24 hours, I'd recommend taking her back to the vet to see if she need antibiotics. Itching or licking damages skin, which allows normal bacteria on the surface to set up a mild infection, and sometimes the immune system can clear it up if the itching stops, but sometimes oral or topical medications are required.
