My dog ate a plum pit. Can dogs pass foreign objects or need surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 16 days old

Hi, my small 9 month Pomeranian puppy ate a plum pit (it was a small plum). I took her to the vet, she got x-rayed & she’s taking medication to help soften her stool & she has a bruised throat as well. She’s taking Sulcrate, Tramadol & Clavamox. She has not pooped out the pit yet & has started using her meds Tuesday, Jan 15,2019. Just wanted to ask, do dogs poop out small objects or do they most likely need gastrointestinal surgery.

Bella is so cute! I love the picture with the glasses. Unfortunately sometimes surgery is needed to remove a small object, they just aren't able to be passed. Keep in close contact with your vet, and be prepared that she may need surgery if she doesn't pass this pit soon. Best of luck.
