My rescued kitten eats human food. Is it safe? How do I stop it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 months and 30 days old

My kitten was an abandoned/orphaned 2 weeks old from the street, he tries to eat my food a lot and when I am done, he tries to taste the leftovers. I am wondering if this behaviour is due to him coming from generations of street cats, which are very common where I live, that made him more inclined to eat anything? Is he more resistant to the negative effects of human food than the average housecat? And what can I do to lessen this behaviour? He eats more cat food than my other (larger) cat.

Congratulations on your new kitten Bosbos! He may be more prone to eat human food because he was on the streets. Some cats however just like human food! Regardless I don’t think he would be any less inclined to get an upset stomach from eating the human food so I would advise against giving it to him. At this age, it’s important for him to eat kitten food as this will allow for proper bone and brain development. Try to ensure that as the majority of his daily food intake. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
