My bird's broken wing feather was pulled out. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Male

My bird had began squawking and digging at his wing so we decided to check and see if everything was okay. When we started to look at him, he took off flying and we quickly realized what was going on; he had broken another wing feather and it was sticking out sideways, so we quickly yanked it out and he seemed to be okay after that besides the bleeding, I’m just wondering if he’ll be okay from now on or if he should be seen be a veterinarian for more observation?

Thanks for reaching out about Chipper and including photos. You should monitor the growth of the next feather from that follicle. If it grows in rotated, there is a chance this might be a persistent problem. Then a veterinary visit is recommended to diagnose the condition, which might include blood work, a nutrition discussion and possible follicle biopsy. Often times it is a one time problem, where the feather was tweaked in the follicle and grew in abnormal. Good luck.
