My older cat has kidney issues and detached retina. Is surgery viable?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Have an older cat with kidney issues. One of the side effects is high blood pressure. This happened and one of her retinas detached. Obviously we saw a vet and immediately started medication to bring down the bp. I have read many pros and cons on retinal surgery and wanted to know some realistic thoughts on how effective surgery would be and at this moment we are about two days in. Timeline for surgery says quicker is better? Also heard $2,000 is avg cost. Your thoughts

I'm sorry your cat has a retinal detachment. If the retinas remain detached for more than a day or two, the prognosis is poor for a return of normal vision. Therefore, the key to a successful outcome is rapid diagnosis and early administration of the proper medication to lower blood pressure. Given that you have already started medication, she may have a good prognosis for restoring her sight, but only the vet treating her can say for sure. If you are willing to do the surgery, get it done asap. Best of luck.
