My dog has pyometra symptoms. Should I get another X-ray or an ultrasound?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 4 years old | 13.5 lbs

Hi, I took my 4yo Shih Tzu (Mamas) to vet yesterday. She had bloodwork done and xrays. Vet could not confirm but she suspects Pyometra. Mamas was vomiting, not eating, and very shakey. Still no change, vet wants to take xray again. Is that wise if they couldn't confirm anything with that the first time?

Hello, sorry to hear about Mamas. An x-ray would indeed show a large pus filled uterus as in the case with pyometras. However, a smaller uterus may not be evident on radiographs. An even more sensitive test for detection of pyometras would be an abdominal ultrasound. You may speak with your veterinarian about obtaining an abdominal ultrasound or referring you to a practice with ultrasound capabilities to confirm the presence of a pyometra. Alternative, Mamas could have other causes for her signs such as a dietary indiscretion, or even ingestion of foreign material. Given that bloodwork and x-rays have already been performed, then next diagnostic step is to pursue an abdominal ultrasound regardless. Hope this helps and best of luck.
