My cat has a shoulder lump. Should I worry if she purrs when touched?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 5 lbs

I found a small lump on my cat near her shoulder. it started out long and skinny and has seemed to turned into small and round. when i touch is to examine it she purrs and kisses me as if it feels good to be massaged. like a pulled muscle would. Is this something I should be concerned about. She is a year and a half old and so is her brother, they play a lot and get into trouble a lot. She is a very muscular cat.

In a cat this young, the lump is likely to be something like a cyst or a benign tumor. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. I'd call Baby's vet to make her an appointment to get this checked out. Best of luck.
