Can my older dog produce milk if my 5-week puppy nurses? Is it safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 16 days old | 5 lbs

So I have a puppy that's 5 weeks old. We had to put his mom down about a week ago from masstitis. I have an older dog who hasn't had puppies in a year and isn't pregnate. I caught my puppy nursing off my older dog earlier today. Is that ok? And is it also possible that my older dog is producing milk because his mom isn't here?

I'm sorry you recently lost Titan's mother! At five weeks of age, he's old enough to be weaned and shouldn't be nursing. I'd keep him separate from this other dog to stop the behavior. If he did nurse enough, she would produce milk for him, but he doesn't need it at this age. A puppy food is fine for him. I hope this helps!
