My indoor cat snuck out, fought. Is he safe from rabies after vaccine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 11.5 lbs

I have an almost two year old kitty that stays indoors but the other day he snuck his way out.I didn't realize it until I heard what sounded like a cat fight outside by front door and I went outside and saw my cat but didn't see the other animal. This was about 11:30pm. He was due for his second year rabies vaccine and was four months behind. I took him to the vet the very next day for his rabies shot, will he be okay.

Hopefully Teddy will be ok. You did the right thing by taking him into the vet the next day for the rabies vaccine. Four months isn't extremely far over, so he may have still had some protection from his last shot. I hope this helps!

It's a good idea to have Teddy taken to the vet tomorrow. Yes he can get a rabies booster, but the vet may talk to you about quarantining him to be safe for 10 days to observe him to see if signs of rabies appears as he is six months later for his vaccine. I hope this helps.
