Dog diarrhea and whimpering after vet meds: What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 12 month yellow lab was diagnosed with mildish hip dysplasia today. They gave her an iv to sedate her, give her pain meds, etc... Now she is having horrible diarrhea. She keeps trying to go, but only a little bit of liquid comes out and she's whimpering and licking herself in between. What should I do?

This may be a sequel to the medications given. I suggest you fast Maggie for 24 hours and then put the dog on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up problem, or if your dog gets lethargic, it needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.
