Post-neuter care for my kitten: routine, licking, and pain meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 15 days old | 6 lbs

My 5 month old kitten just got neutered today, he’s acting completely fine and his self. He even pooped as soon as we got home. Is he be able to go to his normal routine and not be close off into a room? What are the care guides for a male neuter cat? Is he able to lick himself in the area ? We haven’t gave him any pain medicine although we did buy some from the vets office.

Hello. Most cats do very well after surgery, so as long as Haiku does not get too active tearing through the house, he can pretty much do his usual routine. There are no special requirements to aid in his healing other than to check the area for anything that looks unusual. He can clean the surgical area & will not harm anything. I would continue his pain medications at least for a day or so to make sure he has a normal recovery. If anything does concern you, contact your veterinarian immediately.
