My 1-week-old guinea pig has URI and eye issues. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Female | unspayed

I have 2 guinea pigs that are about 1 week old and one of them has a clicking sound and brown crust around it’s nose. I’m guessing it’s a URI but Ive been told that you can’t get antibiotics for newborns. My other newborn I thought was blind but after checking up on it again it’s eye was covered and protruding. Please help!!

Thanks for reaching out about Peppa. This does sound like an upper respiratory disease, and these can be bacterial or viral. There are some antibiotics safer to give newborns, such as doxycycline, and treats many of the diseases that cause URIs in guinea pigs. Not sure what is going on the eye on the other one, but a corneal infections if a concern. It is recommended your see a veterinarian to help and prescribe medication. good luck.
