Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Male | 5 lbs

My sister is sending me her dachshund Dobby. She has a 5 year old son and is pregnant with #2. She can't deal with Dobby anymore. she says that he nips her son all the time and can't get him to stop. she has admitted to hitting the dog when he does this. i have a 5 year old son as well and i need advice on how to properly break Dobby of his nipping. I can't have him biting my son either! he's about 2 years old i believe and i'm not sure if he's fixed or not. Please help!

I'm sorry you are facing this problem! First find out if Dobby is neutered or not. If he's not, get him neutered. Sometimes aggressive behaviors can be hormonally related, and neutering him may help. Then I would get him in with a professional behavioral expert. I never recommend owners work with aggressive dogs on their own due to the risks. It can be dangerous. While in training, do not allow Dobby around your son unsupervised. Monitor all interactions between them, and keep them completely apart when you cannot watch them closely. I hope this helps.
