My pug's eye is swollen with discharge. Should I go to the ER vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | spayed | 18 lbs

My 8 year old pug has a swollen red eye with green discharge. She’s slightly lethargic and shivering occasionally. No fever. It’s currently 1a... vet doesn’t open until 8a. The only 24/7 hospital is a 2hr drive and extremely expensive. Can I get an opinion on weather I should wait or take her in for an emergency visit at the hospital? She’s prone to respiratory infections and has pulmonary fibrosis as well - not sure if that info makes a difference.

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Chloe. It is concerning that her eye is swollen red with green discharge, and it needs to be looked at as soon as possible. That being said, given the ER hospital is two hours away, with driving and a possible wait to be seen, it may be hours before she gets in. I would take her into her vet first thing in the morning. Use a soft cloth that is damp to wipe away any discharge. I hope this helps!
