Why is my Rottweiler's back leg shaking, painful, and he can't stand?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | neutered | 8 years and 2 months old | 90 lbs

My Rotweiller can't stand up. His back legs, especially the right leg seem to give out and he growls if we try to help him stand up or anything like that. His right leg even seems to quiver and shake like he can't control it at all. Whenever he can stand up the right leg is always lifted up and he seems to be kind of mini stepping with it. What could possibly be the cause?

It sounds like the leg may be pretty painful if he's limping and won't bear weight on it (or let you touch it). Possible causes can include anything from a soft tissue or bone injury (such as a sprain or break), something stuck in the foot or between the toes, tumors or growths affecting the bones or joints, or even a nerve issue causing the leg to not work properly. I would have Rambo examined by your vet ASAP, especially if he is very painful and can't walk on the leg.
