My puppy had pneumonia. Is returning mucus a sign of decline?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 22 days old | 6 lbs

My 12 week old English bulldog has pneumonia was treated at vet hospital for one week and has been home for about 4 days on marbofloxacin and cloramphenicol. It seemed she was getting so much better but now I noticed thick nasal discharge again and more mucus that she is licking back rather than coughing up. Is this normal or sign of declining rather than getting better? She still has full appetite and fluids just seems mucus has returned.

I would definitely be concerned about the mucus returning. Good news is that she isn't coughing it up but it is in her upper respiratory tract. Bad news is that she is on some strong antibiotics yet still having this discharge. I would contact your vet and let them know. They may want to culture this discharge and send it in to ensure she doesn't have a resistant infection that needs different or additional antibiotics. It is also good that she is still eating. Dogs with true pneumonia usually don't have much of an appetite. I hope this helps!
