My dog has a painful split nail and is limping. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Female | spayed | 80 lbs

Hello Seems my Berner had nail injury. She was licking it all the time, took her to vet. BASED on exam found that there is new tissue growth (split nail) happening adjacent to one that had injury. She was put on antibiotics for 14 days ( thats done). The licking reduced but seems she is in pain and is limping now. Appreciate advise, should the old nail be removed or let it stay and hopefully the tissue growth/split nail would heal itself Any gel to help healing (pic attached) Thanks/

Hi, I think the old nail should be removed. It would also be great if we could prevent Marley from licking the area as this can cause inflammation and infection. I know this is tricky given Marley’s breed ! Another thing you could do is bathe Marley’s paw in diluted Chlorexidine twice a day, dilution is normally 1:10 (i.e. one part of chlorexidine to 10 of water ) but even to make a very diluted pink solution will do and dry up with a clean cotton cloth afterwards. Hope this helps !
