Are plastic pet bowls safe? Can they cause cancer in cats or dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Savannah Cat | Male | neutered | 2 years and 10 months old

I've read that plastic bowls can cause cancer in dogs and cats. We recently had to put our cat to sleep due to lymph cancer. He was only 2 1/2 years old. My Vet said it was not the virus cancer. Now I feel responsible as I was feeding him out of plastic bowls.

I have no found any definitive research linking plastic bowls to cancer. From what I can see, it's anecdotal evidence. Unfortunately sometimes young cats get cancer. It's rare, but it does happen. Don't feel responsible, it's not your fault.
