My cat's euthanasia: How to comfort him without food, or catnip?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 13 years and 8 months old | 8 lbs

I have to put Charlie down on Tuesday night and I want to know how can I make him comfortable and I can’t give him any treats pr his favorite food because he is not eating, also would it be ok to give him catnip before they give him the shot?

I would not give Charlie catnip. That can amp him up and make the process more difficult. Catnip typically does not calm a cat down. I'm wondering if he would eat some chicken (no bones) or tuna. Vets will give a sedative before giving the euthanasia solution, so that will make him calm and comfortable. As I said in my previous answer, holding him and loving him is the best thing you can do to make him comfortable.
