Why is my dog in pain and shivering after playing in the snow?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 3 lbs

It was snowing at my house all day yesterday so on and off we were letting Mac play in the snow but not for too long because it was very cold. This morning when we got up he was shivering while it is very hot in my room and I couldn’t get him to get up and walk downstairs I had to carry him. Is it possible he caught a cold or something similar?

It could be Mac is painful from his play in the snow, and may have injured himself. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Best of luck.
