My 8-week-old puppy has soft stool with blood but is playful. Is it normal?

My puppy is 8 weeks old and has soft stool with a spot of blood, is that normal? She is still very playful, drinking water and eating.

Hello, thank you for your question. Soft stools with some blood could be a sign of intestinal parasites which is not uncommon in puppies. I would recommend contacting your veterinarian tomorrow to discuss submitting a stool sample for testing and to consider deworming her. If there is only a small amount of blood this could be secondary to inflammation within her colon/GI tract. Hope this helps!

I would recommend having your veterinarian check a urinalysis and fecal on Bonnie. Is the stool normal or soft? Sometimes if the stool is soft they cannot hold it and it seems like they don't know they are defecating. It can be something like a urinary tract infection and/or intestinal parasites and your veterinarian can rule in or out both of them. Yesterday I got an 8 week old female Australian Shepherd. She has blood in her stool. Should I take her to the vet?
It would be a good idea to have a stool sample tested for parasites. You could call your vet and see if they can test a sample and if they want to see her, as well. She may need to be dewormed. It could also be secondary to the stress with a change in environment and/or food. You could add a probiotic to her diet and see if that helps, too. Good luck with the new puppy!

My puppy has blood in her poo. She’s 11-12 weeks old.
This is usually dietary related and if no other signs are present at this stage, the problem could be managed by start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. If that is the case antibiotics may be needed. Hi we just got our pup on Friday we have noticed in her stools tonight there is blood and the stool is quite watery she is still eating and drinking and going to the toilet she has still been wanting to run about and play
I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian to make sure she does not have parasites or a viral infection. Parasites can cause diarrhea but the puppy will still act healthy. You can use an over the counter probiotic to help firm up the stool too.

Poor Sophia! The loose stool and blood could be due to many conditions including the medication, the worms, a viral infection, bacterial over growth, parasites (coccidia and giardia) or even something more sinister. Unfortunately it's impossible to know which one for sure caused the problem. Any time blood is present however, you should be concerned since it indicates severe inflammation and disruption of the intestinal mucosa. Additionally, certain types of worms and parasites can infect human. It's very important to know the exact parasite status of pets to prevent humans from being infected. I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian today. Try to remember to take in a stool sample. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth and then give appropriate treatment. Other diagnostics may be recommended as well. My 14 week old Great Dane has worms and blood in his stool. Otherwise he is his usual playful self. The vet does not open until the morning. Do we need to take him to the ER?
As long as he is behaving normally, he can see your veterinarian tomorrow. Monitor for lethargy, pale gums or difficulty breathing. If he should develop any of these symptoms, have Drago seen at the nearest veterinary ER. Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to identify the intestinal parasites so the appropriate dewormer can be dispensed. You may need to feed a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal.

That could be many things and the most common are parasites, viruses and bacteria over growth. I recommend to have Coco seen today by the veterinarian. Blood in the stool is never normal. Congrats on your new puppy but I'm sorry CoCo has been having problems with diarrhea! I'm not sure if she has been dewormed or not, but intestinal worms could be a cause of her diarrhea with blood. I would get her a deworming treatment such as Panacur, which you can get OTC. She would need a second course of treatment two weeks after the first one ends to kill all the worms. If she is up to date on her deworming treatment, then I would have her seen by a vet for this. It's not an emergency because she is eating and playful, and I would have her seen by a vet in the morning. Should she become very lethargic, stops vomiting, stops eating altogether, or has more blood in her feces, then I would have her seen by a vet immediately.

I have had Maia since Christmas Day and she has had Diarrhea since I brought her home. She is otherwise healthy and acts like a normal puppy she definitely has an appetite and drinks water like she should. She is playful and happy and does sleep a go
Puppies commonly have intestinal parasites that can cause diarrhea. Many of these are microscopic and not visible in the poop. I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Please take a fresh poop sample with you to your appointment.
