What's this dry, bleeding spot on my dog's back? Ringworm or hotspot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 2.4 lbs

I noticed a bump yesterday on my dog’s back around his ribs, it was kinda small but felt dry and now I just noticed the spot got a littl bigger and there was a little blood too it looks like a scratch but it’s dry and round, could it be ringworm or just a hotspot?

You will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for a skin exam. Your dog could be suffering from an allergy, mites, fleas, a bacterial or fungal infection. each of these requires a different treatment, so it is important to find out what is causing the itch. This does, however look like a bacterial infection, Your vet will do a thorough exam and maybe a a skin scrape. He will then discuss the options with you and then prescribe medications such as antibiotics and possibly an antibiotic/antifungal shampoo.
