My puppy has parvo. How can I care for him at home & clean safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 18.5 lbs

Hello, it appears that my puppy (4ish month) has parvo. He got serums and IV, also some antibiotics and other medications. Hopefully he will get well. How can i help him now while we wait to see the outcome of the medication? And can i use bleach to clean the apartment? I guess it will help if the house is free of the virus? Any other advice is helpful. Tnx.

I hate to hear that Leny is so sick. First you will want to make sure that you follow the doctor's instructions exactly and that you don't miss any of the medications. Many times these puppies suffer from dehydration and this can lead to other problems, so it is essential that you watch his fluid intake. If he seems like he is not drinking enough, then take him back to the vet for more fluids. You can also touch his gums to roughly check fro dehydration. Lift up his upper lip and touch the gums above the canine (fang) teeth. It should be some slick/smooth with saliva. If your finger sticks to the gum, them he is possibly dehydrated. You also need to feed him a very bland diet. I recommend Royal Canin High Energy Puppy if you can find it. Otherwise Hill Science diet makes one call i/d that is also good. Your vet may also have their own recommendations. Basically just watch Leny very closely and take him back to the vet if something doesn't seem right. Lastly, yes, bleach is what you will need to clean with. It will kill the virus. Leny will continue to shed to virus in his feces for 6 months so don't take him to parks or over to play with your friend's dogs who have no been fully vaccinated. You don't want to spread this and make some one else's puppy sick. I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to post any additional questions!
