My dog changed after a seizure. How can I help his cognitive decline?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 9 months old | 12.12 lbs

My pet had a seizure 3 years ago due to toxicity and was sent to pet hospital. He stayed for 7 days and was put on doses of anesthesia preventing his seizure from relapse. Upon recovery, he does not have seizure anymore. But, he is also not behaving how he used to be. It has been 3 years and he can no longer understands any command not even "sit". He is now "living in his own world". He can eat and sleep normally. Prior to that, he was extremely intelligent learning fast. Pls advice.

Maocai is adorable! Unfortunately prolonged/severe seizures can cause permanent brain damage and personality changes. Purina makes a prescription diet called Neurocare that is highly rated by owners of dogs with seizures, dementia and other cognitive issues. VetriScience also makes a senior multivitamin that is highly rated by owners who report that their dogs appear to be more alert and responsive after taking them regularly. I recommend inquiring with your veterinarian about a prescription for the Purina Neurocare diet. Good luck!
